Privacy Policy

The short version

Nothing you do in the app is recorded, profiled, or sold, and nothing identifies you.

The app is not entirely offline any more. If you connect Apple Music, Green Onions talks to Apple to list your playlists and stream your songs, and it asks one music database for the tempo of a song it can't measure itself. What gets sent is described below, in full. Music stored on your device never leaves it. (This website is a separate thing from the app; it's covered at the bottom.)

What the app accesses on your device

To do its job — playing your music at a tempo matched to your cadence — Green Onions needs access to music you choose to bring in:

• Music you import from Files. When you add songs from the Files app, Green Onions copies those audio files into its own storage on your device.
• Your local media library and iTunes purchases (only with your permission). If you choose to import from your device's music library, iOS asks for your permission first. When granted, Green Onions copies the songs you specifically pick into its own storage so it can analyze and tempo-match them offline. It does not read, upload, or catalog your wider library.
• Apple Music (only with your permission). If you connect Apple Music, iOS asks for your permission first. When granted, Green Onions reads your playlists and their contents so it can list them and play them at your cadence. It does not modify your playlists, your library, or your listening history.

Music that lives on your device stays on your device. It is never uploaded anywhere.

What the app sends over the network

Green Onions has no servers of its own, and no data about you is sent anywhere. It makes three kinds of outbound request, all of them in service of playing a song:

• Apple Music (Apple). Listing your playlists, fetching their contents, and streaming audio. These requests go to Apple through the system's own MusicKit framework and are handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. Green Onions has no access to your Apple Account credentials.
• Tempo lookup (Deezer). A streamed song never reaches the app as a file, so its tempo can't be measured the way an imported song's can. To find it, Green Onions queries the public Deezer API with the song's ISRC — the recording's standard industry identifier — or, failing that, with its artist and title. Nothing else is sent: no account, no device identifier, no library contents, and nothing that says who is asking. Deezer, like any web server, sees the IP address the request came from. Deezer's own policy is at deezer.com/legal/personal-datas.
• Preview clips (Apple). When the lookup above finds nothing, Green Onions downloads the song's public 30-second preview clip from Apple's catalog and measures the tempo from it on your device. The clip is analyzed and discarded; only the resulting number is kept.

These requests happen when you open an Apple Music playlist. If you never connect Apple Music, the app makes no network connections at all.

What the app collects

Nothing. Green Onions has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics. It does not collect personal information, usage data, location, contacts, identifiers, or diagnostics. Your song library, your detected and edited BPM values, and your pace settings are stored only in the app's local storage on your device.

Accounts

There are none. Green Onions does not require or offer account creation, and there is no login. Connecting Apple Music uses the Apple Account already signed in on your device; the app never sees those credentials.

Third parties

The app includes no third-party analytics, advertising, tracking, or software development kits. The only outside services it contacts are Apple, for Apple Music playback, and Deezer, for tempo data — both described above, and neither one told anything about you. This website is a different matter, and it's described below.

Children

Green Onions does not collect personal data from users of any age. No personal information is ever gathered, from anyone.

Data storage and deletion

All app data lives locally on your device. You are in full control:

• Delete individual songs from within the app's Library at any time.
• Deleting the Green Onions app from your device removes all of its data permanently.

Apple

Green Onions is distributed through Apple's App Store. Any diagnostics or usage information you have chosen to share with Apple at the system level are handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy, not by Green Onions. The app itself receives none of it.

This website

greenonions.app is separate from the app, and unlike the app it does rely on two outside services. Neither one has any connection to the app, and neither can see anything about your music.

• GoatCounter counts page visits and taps on the App Store button, so I can tell whether anyone is finding this site and whether it's doing its job. It sets no cookies, stores no IP addresses or identifiers, and doesn't follow you to any other website. It can't identify you.
• Google Fonts serves the typeface these pages are set in. Your browser requests that font file from Google, which sees your IP address — the same as it would for any font or image hosted elsewhere.

There is no advertising here, no tracking pixels, and nothing that follows you off this site. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, which keeps its own standard server logs.

Changes to this policy

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new effective date, and any material change will ship with a clear notice in the app. What the app does with your data will always be described here accurately and in plain language.
